More About Us: Our Story & Mission

Who We Are

The Hong Lien Foundation is a grassroots humanitarian organization dedicated to breaking the cycle of systemic poverty in Vietnam’s most vulnerable regions. Born out of a deeply personal journey of resilience, we act as a global bridge—connecting compassionate donors, volunteers, and medical professionals with isolated communities that lack access to life’s most basic necessities.

Our work is centered in the remote A Lưới region of Central Vietnam, an isolated mountainous territory where ethnic minority communities and families affected by the multi-generational legacy of Agent Orange face immense geographic and economic barriers.

Our Roots: A Legacy of Sacrifice

Our foundation is anchored in a story of profound gratitude and humility. Founded by the children of Vietnamese refugees who arrived in the United States in 1975, the Hong Lien Foundation honors a legacy of hard work and love.

Our founders watched their parents transition from comfortable, respected lives in Vietnam to working grueling hours as blue-collar factory laborers in America—all to secure a brighter future for their family. We carry that same spirit of relentless sacrifice into our mission today. We believe that no matter how deep the cycle of poverty is, it can be broken when a community is given a strong, supportive foundation.

What Guides Us: Our Core Values

  • Empowerment Over Charity: We do not believe in temporary fixes. We build foundations for enduring growth, equipping families with the tools, knowledge, and assets they need to become multi-generational and self-sufficient.

  • Grassroots Collaboration: We reject top-down aid. This means that we believes that the people closest to the pain are the ones closest to the solution. It’s a promise to listen before acting, to empower rather than dictate, and to respect the dignity of the people being served. We work directly on the ground alongside local leaders and commune representatives, utilizing indigenous knowledge to ensure our initiatives are practical, culturally respectful, and directly impactful.

  • Radical Financial Integrity: We honor every dollar trusted to us. 90% of all contributions go directly toward funding and executing our field programs, with a lean 10% reserved for essential compliance, fundraising, and administrative infrastructure.

Our Three Pillars of Impact

We deliver sustainable change through a holistic, wraparound care framework focused on three essential pillars:

1. Healthcare Access

In the rugged Annamite Mountains, basic medical care is often hours away. We coordinate international medical missions, bringing together overseas doctors, dentists, and specialists to run free mobile field clinics. We provide general checkups, dental procedures, vision care, and targeted medical evaluations for families dealing with severe, long-term illnesses linked to historic dioxin exposure.

2. Sustainable Food Security

We tackle hunger from two angles: immediate relief and long-term sustainability. Alongside distributing non-perishable food staples to families in crisis, we implement agricultural models like our Goat Husbandry Program. By providing families with livestock, we create a self-sustaining cycle that offers a reliable source of protein, independent household income, and food security for years to come.

3. Equal Education

We believe education is the ultimate baseline for a better future. The foundation empowers youth by removing the financial barriers that keep children out of the classroom. We fund tuition fees and provide school supplies, ensuring that underserved children in isolated communes have a direct pathway to secondary education and career opportunities.

Join Our Community

We cannot do this work alone. The Hong Lien Foundation relies on a global network of changemakers to bring these programs to life. Whether you are a healthcare professional looking to volunteer on our next mission trip, a translator bridging communication gaps, or a donor investing in a family's long-term self-sufficiency, there is a place for you here.
