When a Small Gift Becomes That Evening’s Meal: Ms. Ho’s Story

The purpose of my visit to Ms. Ho’s home was simple: to understand her living conditions and learn what would truly help her family. What I found was a life built on resilience and grace.

Ms. Ho’s house is just one room that must become everything at once, a kitchen, living space, and bedroom. Her meals are prepared on a single burner. When we arrived, we had unknowingly interrupted her lunch: a small bowl of rice and one piece of chicken shared carefully among her family.

Before leaving, I offered Ms. Ho a small cash gift to thank her for welcoming us so kindly into her home. She gently clasped her hands and explained something I will never forget: what felt small to me was equal to what she earns in an entire day, enough to guarantee her family could eat dinner that night.
